The Panzer Assault Badge in Silver was introduced on December 20, 1939 for award to all ranks of tank crews (tank commander, driver, gunner and radio operator) who had been involved in three different armored assaults on three different days. The institution order indicated the criteria for award of the badge was to be effective as of January 1st 1940. From December 31, 1942 armored unit repair teams could receive the silver badge for repairing tanks in combat conditions on three different days.

On June 1st 1940 a Bronze version of the Panzer Assault Badge was created for panzer grenadier units equipped with armored vehicles, as well as other infantry, armored reconnaissance, armored signals and medical units serving with Panzer divisions, who had been involved in three different armored assaults on three different days.
