April 1938 “Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Fuhrer!” Plebiscite Emergency Services Arm Shield was worn during the Plebiscite held in Austria on April 10, 1938 to confirm that country’s union with Germany. Austria’s annexation by Germany is more commonly known as “The Anschluss” and a plebiscite was held to show that the people of Austria approved this annexation or political union. Over 98 percent of the Austrian voters approved the referendum. At this time German troops were already in Austria, entering the country earlier in the year, on March 12th, on orders of Hitler. The piece is made of silver/gray finished plastic by Richard Sieper & Sohne of Ludenscheid, which was one of the few companies in Germany that did produce badges in plastic at this time. The NSKK reference by Angolia and Littlejohn states that this piece is a vehicle plaque for election assistants. 2 3/4 by 2 3/4 inches. LH12085
